Starting a Home Staging Business (Or: Explaining Cryptocurrency to My Dog)

Starting a home staging business has been a bit like trying to explain cryptocurrency to my dog.
Not because home staging doesn't work.
Not because I'm terrible at it.
But because I'm essentially saying,"You know that thing you've never heard of? You need it."
Here in North Devon, most conversations begin with, "What's home staging?", and end with, "That sounds… interesting."
Which, translated from British, usually means, "I'm not entirely sure what you've just said, but I wish you well."
The Reality Behind the Instagram Posts
Everyone sees the polished room shots, the beautiful made beds and the carefully styled coffee tables.
What they don't see is the less glamorous reality.
Writing blogs that only Google bots and my mum have read (Hi, Mum!)
Posting on LinkedIn and wondering whether my WiFi has stopped working because nobody has reacted.
Cold-emailing estate agents and hoping I sound more "trusted partner" than "have you considered a conservatory?"
Offering free consultations to a diary that looks suspiciously available.
Googling "how to network in rural areas" at 10.47pm.
Hearing "not right now" so often it's practically become my business slogan.
Convincing myself every Tuesday that THIS is the week everything takes off.
And then there are the spreadsheets… Everyone talks about leads and pipelines. I have one lovingly titled, "People Who Haven't Replied Yet." It's disturbingly comprehensive.
The 3am Entrepreneur Special
Starting a business is funny… not funny "ha-ha" - Funny "why am I awake wondering whether I should have become an accountant?" funny.
You question everything.
Should I be posting more?
Should I be networking more?
Should I have stayed in my soul-crushing but regular paid job?
Should I stop saying "home staging" and just tell people I fluff cushions for a living?
But then something happens.
......Somebody Gets It
Someone says,"Actually, I do have a property that's struggling."
Or, "I never thought about how empty rooms look on Rightmove..."
Or the golden words, "Could you come and have a look?"
And suddenly all those blogs, emails, LinkedIn posts and slightly awkward networking coffees feel worthwhile.
Why I'm Still Here (Besides Stubbornness)
Building a business isn't overnight success or viral posts - it's:
• Planting seeds in conversations
• Explaining the same thing 127 times with genuine enthusiasm
• Showing up when your LinkedIn analytics are frankly depressing
• Believing in something before everyone else does
North Devon might not know about home staging…. Yet. But empty properties still don't sell themselves.
Buyers still can't visualise space or potential, but I know small changes make a massive difference.
And I believe that, slowly, people are starting to understand that too.
The Plot Twist
I'm not crushing it yet.
But I am building something real.
Slowly. Stubbornly. With excellent tea breaks.
And honestly? I've become exceptionally good at explaining home staging - so good in fact that next week, I'm tackling the even bigger challenge: explaining why I left a perfectly good job to become a house whisperer.
